About the artist:
For me, turning began a few years ago while recovering from hip
replacement surgery. What began as a whim with a small, inexpensive
lathe, has turned into an extraordinary activity that unlocked my creativity.
Unlike other hobbies or crafts that require long hours and days to
completion, wood turning treats the inpatient nature of my makeup. I can
see what my efforts will bring in about 2-3 hours. And being the impatient
type, mistakes and errors are bound to pop up. In my shop this is
considered a “design change”. Instead of a large salad bowl, I now have a
small nut bowl.
Because every piece of wood is different and every tree unique, each
turned piece is one of a kind. The grain growth and direction varies based
on the amount of rain and sun it receives from year to year. My philosophy
is never to destroy a healthy tree for the sake of a bowl. The wood that is
used to make my bowls, hollow forms, candles, wine stops, etc. has
already fallen as a result of storms, and disease or cut down by
developers for urban growth.
Many treasured pieces have been turned from wood that was rescued from
the local land fills and county recycling yards. Some chunks have had
fences nailed to them, been hit by drought, fire, and insect infestation.
These pieces will very often have very special characteristics. A knot, bark
inclusions, voids, insect holes, and other “imperfections” help create
surprises in the finished turning that makes it unique and different. (see
exhibit in the Photo Album).
Whether you are a collector or you are looking for a unique handcrafted gift
for that special someone, wood turnings are perfect. I produce the highest
quality, most unique wood turnings, platters, vases and hollow forms, in
our shop here in beautiful Yardville, NJ.
